(WPDE) — The Covington Drive fire containment has increased to 75% as of Monday morning, according to the South Carolina Forestry Commission.
While the fire remains at 2,059 acres, heavy rainfall in the Carolina Forest area on Sunday reached approximately one inch across the fire.
The fire area will be scouted by crews on Monday to evaluate the rain’s impact and adjust suppression tactics.
Mastication crews begin work on Monday. The project is expected to take seven to 10 days to complete.
The mastication work will establish a defensible space to act as a modified buffer zone between houses and the smoldering wildfire.
The zones will increase the chances of the structures surviving a wildfire without active defense being required.
This also provides firefighters with accessibility and space if protective measures are necessary.
