SOUTH CAROLINA (WMBF) – The South Carolina Forestry Commission has issued a burn ban for the entire Palmetto State.
The agency has a State Forester’s Burning Ban in place in all South Carolina counties.
The State Forester’s Burning Ban prohibits all outdoor burning, including yard debris burning, prescribed burning and campfires in all unincorporated areas of the state.
This was issued due to the low relative humidity on top of the drying fuels due to the lack of significant rain the state, which caused 92 wildfires on Saturday alone.
The agency said most of the wildfire activity is concentrated to the Pee Dee region, which includes Horry County. This has strained the capacity of agency firefighters who are able to respond to the wildfires.
The ban will stay in effect until further notice.
Gov. Henry McMaster also provided a statement calling on South Carolinians to heed the ban.
“This means you can and will go to jail for starting a fire outdoors in South Carolina. Period,” the governor said. “Our first responders and firefighters are risking their lives to contain many fires across South Carolina tonight.”
